Hybrid Solar EclipseBy Drew Lawrence: Vedic Astrological

Consultantdrewjlawrence (AT) hotmail (DOT) comwww.drewlawrence.comOn Friday, April 8,

2005, we will experience a Hybrid Solar Eclipse in the sign of Pisces. This

first solar eclipse of 2005 is of an uncommon type known as either

annular-total or hybrid. This is a unique class of eclipse where some sections

of the path are annular while other parts are total. The duality comes about

when the vertex of the Moon's umbral shadow pierces the Earth's surface at some

points, but falls

short of the planet along other sections of the path. The unusual geometry is

due to the curvature of the Earth's surface which brings some geographic

locations into the umbra while other positions are more distant and enter the

antumbral rather than umbral shadow. In most cases, the central path begins

annular, changes to total for the middle portion of the track, and reverts back

to annular towards the end of the path. Since these events occur near the vertex

of the Moon's umbral/antumbral shadows, the central path is typically quite

narrow. The hybrid solar eclipse of 2005 will be visible from within a thin

corridor which traverses the Southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's shadow

begins southeast of New Zealand and stretches across the Pacific Ocean to

Panama, Columbia, and

Venezuela A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the

Moon's penumbral shadow which includes New Zealand, much of the South Pacific,

South and North America. The central eclipse track begins at 19:54 Greenwich

Daylight Time.Eclipses of the Sun always occur on the New Moon.An eclipse is

generally an inauspicious event since the planets which are the luminaries, the

givers of light, are overshadowed or eclipsed by other celestial bodies. In

Vedic mythology and astrological calculation, we always find the presence of

either lunar node, Rahu or Ketu, in conjunction with the eclipsed planet. Rahu

and Ketu are known as chaya-graha in Sanskrit which means 'shadow planets'

since their purpose is to carry and project the shadow upon the other planets.

This

they accomplish both on the personal or individual level and the collective or

world level. Rahu and Ketu reveal the force or nature of the shadow or negative

behavior pattern and its consequences so that it can be recognized, exposed to

the light of day, and subsequently resolved and removed. There will be only 3

degrees of separation between the Sun and Rahu during this eclipse. The eclipse

effects of April 8th in the sign of Pisces can be triggered around the time of

eclipse but will also likely be experienced for the next 3 1/2 years.EFFECTS OF

THE SOLAR ECLIPSE(According to Classical Sanskrit Astrological Texts)If there

should be both solar and lunar eclipses occurring within one month of each

other as will be the case since there will be a lunar eclipse April 24th,

kings, world leaders and political personalities will suffer destruction

through rebellion. The planet will witness terrible bloodshed. An eclipse which

takes place while the Sun is

traveling through his northern course (from mid January till mid June) will harm

brahmans, that is, priests, attorneys, doctors, teachers, scholars, writers and

clergy as well as kings, political leaders, government agents, elected

officials and the military,The HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE in Pisces on April 8, 2005

will likely yield the following effects worldwide:If people in a particular

place on the earth witness the setting of the Sun while he is seized by an

eclipse, autumn crops will meet with failure and kings and powerful persons in

the land will suffer. If the solar eclipse begins in the south, it will harm

business people, merchants, bankers, stock market speculators, economists,

manufacturers and traders. If found in the southwest, those that earn their

living by fire, such as cooks, potters, smiths and metal workers may suffer job

loss or be exposed to accidents. Railways, factory workers, machinists, as well

as those in the iron, steel and copper

industry will suffer setbacks in the form of job loss, weakened markets or

accidents. An eclipse that takes place in the southern hemisphere will harm

elephants and animals who dwell in water, such as the hippopotamus or the

crocodile. If the eclipse takes place in Pisces, it will affect the shores of

the oceans and articles from the sea, such as pearls, those whose profession is

connected with water, such as sailors, merchant seamen and fishermen, as well as

forestry people, the timber industry and scholars.Since Mercury aspects the

eclipsed sun, the price of oil will again be unstable and will likely rise.

Butter, honey and cooking oil will become expensive or hard to obtain

especially for people in third world countries. Kings, political leaders, the

military and militant groups will suffer. People living on the east coast of

countries, women, boys and learned persons will undergo hardship.Since Venus is

also in conjunction with the eclipsed Sun, it

will lead to the further destruction of crops and various miseries and troubles

will arise.Saturn is also aspecting the eclipsed Sun which means rains will be

below normal and the result will be a shortage of food in some areas. Theft,

graft, corruption, fraud and embezzlement will also be on the increase which

should inspire companies who seek to emulate Enron and World Com as well as

countries which are ruled by dictators. However, here is the good news. Whatever

untoward effects have been declared regarding the sun at the time of this

eclipse, the intensity will be reduced since Jupiter's aspect falls on the sun

as well, just as a blazing fire is put out by water. The eclipse takes place in

the CONSTELLATION known as REVATI which is likely to bring the following:People

in the publishing business, such as editors, writers and reporters may suffer

setbacks or their reputations may come under fire. Some newspapers will

fold.The advertising,

publicity, propaganda, promotions and communications businesses will lose

revenue or be reviled for sending the wrong message in the name of profit. The

legal profession will be exposed for its avarice and the justice system for its

rampant injustice, especially with regard to criminals who virtually go

unpunished and are freed to offend repeatedly.Heads of religious groups may

fall or die or be exposed through scandal.Politicians, governors, ambassadors,

diplomats, and embassy personnel may find themselves under attack, verbally and

bodily. The reputations of university professors, trustees and athletic programs

as well as the schools themselves will come under fire. Their ethics, practices

and politics will likely come into question. Those involved in stock market

investments, currency trading, investment banking, and international trade may

find that stringent laws and levies may hamper their freewheeling commerce. The

business

practices of accountants and auditing firms will yet again find themselves under

the questionable shadow of illegality. The work of some civil engineering firms

in reference to infrastructure will be exposed as being substandard. This is

also true of the industrial and manufacturing sector.Fewer jobs will become

available as the economy falters and longer queues can be expected at

employment offices for those looking for work.VAT, customs and duty, tariffs

and excise taxes will prove even more burdensome for business in many

countries.VEDIC MYTHOLOGYThousands of years ago, the demons and the gods were

instructed by Vishnu (God Himself) to churn the Ocean of Milk at the base of

the universe in order generate the sacred soma, the nectar of immortality. When

the nectar of immortality was produced, the problem was to distribute it between

the gods and demons. To give it to the demons would mean to give infinite

strength to those who would use it

with poor judgment or from a limited, egotistical perspective. To remedy the

situation, Vishnu took the form of a beautiful damsel named Mohini (the

bewilderer) and told the demons to arrange themselves in a row in order to be

served their share of the nectar. In preparation for the intense experience of

drinking the nectar, Mohini asked the demons to close their eyes and meditate.

If anyone opened his eyes, he would lose his chance to share the nectar due to

his impatience. The materialistic and self-involved demons waited and waited.

Mohini distributed the nectar only to the gods.It is generally a female

divinity, a virgin, who protects and bestows divine knowledge or revelation to

the lower beings. Mohini tried to teach the demons that one should not strive

for physical immortality and its benefits but for the supreme knowledge that

transcends all material enjoyment and sensory perception. The demon Rahu who is

thought to be a serpent-like character, had no

intention of cooperating with Mohini's plan and hid himself in the row of gods,

directly between the Sun and the Moon. The Sun god passed the jug of nectar

over to him and he took a drink. At that time, the Sun and Moon gods recognized

him and called out to Mohini, "This is Rahu, the demon, in the midst of the row

of gods!" The nectar had only gone as far as his throat when Mohini threw Her

discus at him, severing his head from his body. But since the nectar was

already in his head, his head became immortal like the other gods. Rahu went on

to perpetually eclipse the Sun and Moon as payback for their treachery toward

him. Ketu is considered to be the tail of the serpent, since Rahu and Ketu are

always exactly 180 degrees apart.WHAT TO DO DURING AN ECLIPSEIn Vedic times,

many thousands of years ago, it was the custom to enter a river, particularly

a sacred river, such as the Ganges, or the ocean or other body of water and

chant mantras and offer prayers for

purification for the duration of the eclipse. Solar and lunar eclipses are

generally very inauspicious, with certain rare exceptions. It is nonetheless an

advantageous opportunity for fasting, prayer and worship of God. Fasting should

be observed for the whole period of the eclipse in order to nullify the

reactions of past negative or egocentric activities. It is also recommended to

give in charity to the poor as much as possible during the time of a lunar or

solar eclipse. If you cannot afford to give in charity, then simply give

charity within your mind, that is, envision yourself doing it just the way you

would on the physical plane. The spiritual benefit for you will be the

same.Pregnant women should never look at an eclipse since it is thought to have

a potentially negative effect on the health of the fetus.NOTE: For those of you

who are currently in a major or minor period of RAHU, this is the optimum time

to offer prayers, chant mantras, and

perform rituals, such as offering incense or candles to the shadow planet, Rahu.

Specific kinds of charity are recommended to be given in order to pacify Rahu.

Donate one or more of the following: any black article; hessonite (cinnamon

stone); coconut; coal; old coins or foreign coins to a diseased or homeless

person.Drew LawrenceThe FieldBallybetagh RoadBallybetagh, KilternanDublin
