Avani Shringeri : Story of Sharadambal Temple

According to legend, Sri Adi Sankara won an important debate over

Sri Mandana Mishra, the incarnation of Sri Subramanya himself. Sri

Adi Sankara requested that Sri.Ubhaya Bharathi, wife of Sri Mandana

Mishra and the incarnation of Goddess Saraswathi herself, grace the

place of his choice. Devi undertook the journey on the condition

that Adi Sankara not look backward. However, he did when he heard

her shalanga. Devi was forced to transform Herself into a shila. The

idol has been in the possession of the Avani Sankarai Mutt.

With the blessings of the present peetadhipathi of Avani Peetam,

Devi now graces the temple for Adi Sharadambal, which has been built

on the top of a hill behind Avani Sringeri Mutt.

The temple was designed and built by Padma Shri Ganapathi Sthapathi

of Kanchipuram. The Saradambal temple and Avani Sringeri Mutt are

approachable by road from both Bangalore and Chennai. From

Bangalore, take NH 4 towards Mulbagal and take a left turn near Sani

temple, and go 2 kms to Avani temple. From Chennai, take NH 4

towards Mulbagal and take a left turn near the Sani temple and go 2

kms towards Avani.
