Guest guest
Thousands of monuments in India left unprotected: experts New Delhi, Nov 6. (PTI): Thousands of monuments in the country have been left unprotected and the conservation of these was a must for passing on the knowledge about traditional architectural methods to future generations, according to experts. The number of unidentified and unprotected monuments of our ancient civilisation run into thousands, they said at a conference here organised by Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) - an NGO working for conservation of unprotected monuments. Such monuments were being destroyed on account of neglect, vandalism and insensitive development, they added. In 1984, only 10,000 monuments were being protected by Archealogical Survey of India and the state government agencies, INTACH Chairman S K Misra said, adding that many thousands of such monuments were still left unprotected. By conserving monuments, one not only gets to know more about traditional architectural methods but also passes it on to future generations, experts from Europe, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh said in a charter which they adopted after the conclusion of the conference. "The Charter for the Conservation of Unprotected Architectural Heritage and Sites which the conference adopted is aimed at spreading awareness about conserving heritage," Misra said. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/001200411060321.htm? headline=Thousands~of~monuments~in~India~left~unprotected:~experts
