The scientists at the Centre have developed the "first" herbal contraceptive pill - Pippalyadi yoga - using a recipe that was rediscovered in a 2,500-year-old medical text, Deputy Director CCRAS Dr K D Sharma said. The efficacy of the drug with different doses has been tested during phase-I Multicentric, Toxicological, Terratogenic and Safety Studies at PGI, Chandigarh; JIPMER, Pondichery and KEM Hospital, Mumbai. "No adverse effect in hormonal, biochemical, endometrial and sonographic studies for ovulation has been reported during the studies conducted on about 1,400 women," said Sharma. The trials were conducted on fertile female volunteers in the age group of 20-34 years. "Prolonged administration of the drug has not shown any significant side effect or adverse effects," said Sharma. The drug is undergoing phase II clinical trials at various centres across the country, as per the standards recommended by International agencies. The pill, offering a relatively cheap, non-toxic contraceptive, would hit the market within two years,. The pill, to be taken orally everyday, costs about US$0.22.
