Arya Samaj Gandhidham

Celebrates its

Golden Jubilee On 18/03/2004

Fifty years ago on this day (18/03/1954) branch of Arya Samaj was started at

Gandhidham by late Shri Laljibhai Gohil and today after fifty years this seed

has grown into a gigantic tree with its branches spreading in all fields of

social work. Our ancestors laid a very strong foundation on which Arya Samaj

Gandhidham is standing today and enjoying the fruits of their hard work and

dedication.

The success story of Arya Samaj Gandhidham started in the year 1986 when

youngsters joined it. Shree Vachonidhi Arya who is now the

Hon.General.Secretary of this organization joined on 6/7/1986 and it was his

induction in Arya Samaj Gandhidham that brought fresh life into this uptil now

dormant body and slowly and steadily Arya Samaj Gandhidham began to be known as

an Non Govermental Organisation (NGO) of stature in Gandhidham area. He devotes

at least 7-8 hours daily for Arya Samaj Gandhidham over and above his duty

hours at the bank where he is serving. He says this all is only possible with

God's blessings and the moral support of his family members and the team

support received at Arya Samaj Gandhidham, and of course the support of the

well wishers. Shri Purshottam Patel joined Arya Samaj Gandhidham on 10/07/1992

and then they both combined well as a team and have taken Arya Samaj Gandhidham

to where it is today. The search for the second line of leadership is already on

so that they can be trained in time to take the reins of Arya Samaj Gandhidham

in their hands when the present team retires.

In 1997 Arya Samaj Gandhidham took up one of the challenges of the time and

started a "Kutch district medical oxygen bank" for the benefit of the people of

this remote corner of India. Now Arya Samaj Gandhidham had truly become a

district level NGO. In the aftermath of the Cyclone of 1998 Arya Samaj

Gandhidham swung into action not only distributing food packets and relief

material but our volunteers also went to Kandla where hundreds of people had

died and they performed the last rites of these dead bodies and thus helped in

stopping the spread of pollution and diseases.

Then in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 26th January 2001, Arya

Samaj Gandhidham immediately swung into action (at 9.00am) and carried out

extensive rescue/relief operations on large scale. Over 2.5 crore rupees worth

of relief material received in the form of 112 trucks from inland and 32

containers from abroad was distributed in the entire Kutch district. For four

months mess was run to feed hundreds of homeless people. Over 1000 dead bodies

were recovered from the debries and their last rites were performed with ghee &

havan samagri with the recital of Vedic mantras. Mobile doctors' team,

structural engineers' team etc. also rendered their services.

Relief aid came from all over the world, but was mainly concentrated to

temporary shelters and food. We also worked to provide all possible help and

also thought of providing long term assistance to the society. We felt that

widows and orphans were the most affected but least attended section. We

immediately planned a project at a cost of Rs. 3 Crores to provide them a

permanent shelter with all possible help to boost their morale, rehabilitate

and shape up their future to make them self sufficient, and thus we started an

orphanage and aptly named it "Jeevan Prabhat" for as the name signifies it is

really a new dawn in the lives of these earthquake orphans and widows. At

present we have 121 children and 8 widows under our care. We are rearing these

children as our own family members totally free of cost without any distinction

of caste & creed. We are forever grateful to the Almighty God for giving us an

opportunity to serve these children, for had we not taken them under our care

they might have become anti-social aliments.

People have built stone & metallic monuments, but we are building the lives of

these live monuments in the memory of the earthquake of 26th January 2001.

The construction of a permament complex for the children at a cost of Rs. 3

crorers is goining on and the IDRF-Boys' wing was inaugurated on the 17th of

December 03, at the hands of the Hon'ble Governor of Gujarat Shri Kailashpati

Mishra and the Girls' wing being constructed with the funds received from the

Prime Ministers National Relief Fund is also complete. Both these wings have

been constructed at a cost of Rs. 56 Lacs each. The finishing work of the

dinning wing and the work station area is in progress.

We had taken the children to visit Delhi in May 03, where they met Hon'ble

President Shri Dr. A P J Kalam and Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari

Vajpayeeji who being impressed by the work of Arya Samaj Gandhidham has donated

Rs. 5.6 million for the construction of the "Jeevan Prabhat" complex for these

orphans. Recently the children visited Gandhinagar at the invitation of the

Hon'ble Governor and the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Narendra Modi.

The children spent some time with both these important persons of Gujarat.

Dignitaries who visited Arya Samaj Gandhidham: Over the years many dignitaries
