Guest guest
Jaya lifts ban animal sacrifice CHENNAI, DHNS In yet another election-eve gesture, the Jayalalitha government in Tamil Nadu on Friday lifted the ban on sacrifice of animals and birds in temples. Tamil Nadu Governor P S Ramamohan Rao, on the advice of the cabinet, promulgated an ordinance repealing a 1950 act enacted during the Congress rule that remained in paper all these years until the AIADMK government revoked it a few months ago and cracked down on those sacrificing goats, buffalos and fowls in temples. The practice is prevalent in village temples and is confined to the lower castes among the Hindus. While the ban was welcomed by the Sangh Parivar as animal or bird sacrifice is not sanctioned by the Agamas, it led to widespread protests from other backward classes. A government press note said that the chief minister decided to repeal the act following representations from devotees that they would invite divine retribution if they did not fulfil their vows. The government did not want to interfere with their religious beliefs, the press note said. This is the second such gesture by Ms Jayalalitha to woo the voters on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections. A few days ago, she extended the scheme of free power supply to agricultural pumpsets, hitherto confined to small and marginal farmers, to all regardless of the extent of their land holdings. --- End forwarded message ---
Guest guest
Dear Friends, whereas I do not agree with slaughtering animals for even for the purpose of a sacrifice, I consider Jaya's lifting the ban as an act of securing religious freedom. The cruelty in sacrificing is quite INCOMPARABLE with the cruelty shown in the "modern" western ways of slaughtering BILLIONS of animals per year just to fill one's stomach. It is cruel, economically unsustainable, and last but not least very unhealthy. And sometimes they do not even fill their stomach: Hundreds of thousands of animals have been just burn because of BSE sickness! Just like that. First they feed the animals unnatural food and when they fall sick - just kill them and burn. What a Kali Yuga in excess... And that was 10 years ago. Now they kill chicken and throw away... Disgusting. Prohibiting sacrifices was and is again a typical "smoke screen" politics of dealing with the small for some ideological purposes and closing the eyes to the big issues. So if prohibiting then prohibit MacDonalds and all killing of cows and other animals for consumption. That would be balanced politics. With best wishes Shaas A.
