Guest guest
Vedic Defense is scientifically validated... Resolving doubts of Hare Krishna Das Dear Hare Krishna Das, Pranam! you asked a very valid, good question. When I first was confronted with the teaching of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation 32 years ago, I was doubting whether this is genuine or not, because the teacher at the lecture said, that it is not necessary to sit in any yoga posture, you can sit comfortable in any chair. As I was coming from the Hatha Yoga field I was a bit apprehensive about this statement and had my doubts. But because I was looking for a good meditation technique I decided after a few month of hesitation to give it a try. And when I got initiated I had such good experiences, which were far better than anything I ever had during all my previous 3 to 4 years of daily morning praxis, that I decided to become a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. Now you have a point, Maharishi is not asking anyone to change his life style, we just teach the technique and let everyone do as he likes , except to add this technique of twice daily experiencing Atma. Again let me tell you my own experience: Within one year I turned to a complete vegetarian. Not because anyone told me, nor was it in anyway a growing fashion as it is today, it was in fact very inconvenient as I had to arrange for my own lunch because the canteen did not provide anything vegetarian. But I felt increasingly bad every time I had meat dishes that I was compelled to change my diet. It is not because of the guru's mantra, but because of the regular experience of Atma which naturally happens by the proper application of the mantra, which physiologically speaking is deep rest, and by that the physiology becomes more sattwic in its demands and your mind and therefore your habits start to change. Today, especially since the discovery of Nero peptides etc. it has become increasingly clear, that there is no separation between mind and body, the subtlest aspect of body is mind or body can be seen as a gross expression of the mind. Deep rooted samskar or stresses or what every you want to call it, which are determining the way every individual looks at his reality, likings, needs etc. need to be normalized. The Gita tells how this deep psychological principle is possible. ³The objects of sense turn away from him who does not feed upon them, but the taste for them persists. ON SEEING THE SUPREME EVEN THIS TASTE CEASES.² BG 2.59 This explains what is happening. The lord explains Arjuna, yes, you go and withdraw the senses, but the taste remains. That only will leave you after having experienced Para. Param drishtwa... There is an English proverb which illustrates the opposite of the above quoted wisdom of the Gita: "The way to hell is plastered with good intentions." Everyone knows that drinking, smoking, staying up late or any bad habit, are not evolutionary. But someone who is predominated by Tamo guni will not change by reading or only hearing about its bad effects. Even if he wants to change, and he or she decides to improve his/her lifestyle or leave a bad habit will find them selves more often then not trapped back into it, because of this deep psychological wisdom brought to light in BG 2.59 What is needed is the principle of the second element. To remove darkness you have to simple put light and you need not to analyze the reason of darkness. Seeing the supreme or Para is the Sanskrit word, which is nothing else than Atma, is it which removes the taste of the object, the impressions in the nervous system. It is for this reason that Maharishi does not make it a prerequisite for anyone to learn Transcendental Meditation that he has to be a saint to start with. Anyone can start to purify him self from what ever level he/she is and no one is prohibited to start meditation because he/she is trapped in a bad habit. Now you have quoted the Ashthanga Yoga. Is there no contradiction? The very name is Ashthanga Yoga, I want to emphasize the word ANGA, which is literally meaning limb and not, as often wrongly translated step. They are numbered from one to eight, but they are limbs not steps. How will you exercise for example yama? I give you a concrete example. The first Yama is Satyam. Now what is Satyam. Generally it is interpreted as speaking truth. Or simply satyam = truth. Now you want to interpret that Patanjali gives as an exercise to speak truth? Every civilized man inclined for spiritual exercise is speaking the truth, what is there to exercise about? But the more profound question is: what is truth? Is it what I experience during sleeping state, or during dreaming state, or during waking state or during a higher state of consciousness? Or is it the form of any given object I see through my eyes, or through the eyes with the help of an extended physical instrument? That all changes the description of reality dramatically. So truth can only be what is unchanging, everlasting, ever the same, and that is Atma, the very same thing what is experienced in the Anga named Samadhi. Following Satyam means to act and speak in accord with all the laws of nature residing on that level of ever lasting truth of Atma or Para. As the Rig Veda says in I.164.39 : Richo Akshare parame vyoman yasmin deva adhi vishwe nishedhu ....in Para all the gods (=laws of nature) are residing eternally. Therefore the key issue comes to always the same thing, experience Atma. For that it is wise to use all 8 angas, and Maharishi emphasizes all of them Asanas, Pranayam etc, not only that, Maharishi includes all aspects of Veda in his teachings, Ayurveda, Vastu, Jyotish etc. In Europe there are also courses teaching proper recitation of different Texts of the Vedic Literature. In India Maharishi is establishing the biggest groups of Vedic Pandits ever established by anyone in recent history to have the effect of Vedic Defense. All aspects of Vedic science should be applied to have the fastest possible evolution for every one. In a live interview with the press, which are broadcasted every Wednesday for the International Press and every Thursday for the Indian Press in the Maharishi TV Channel, a South Indian journalist raised on the 9th of January the question: What life would be better to lead to reach the highest state of consciousness, i.e. Brahmin chetana, - life according to all Vedic rites and samskars incl. marriage or a life as a brahmachari and not get married? Maharishi started to answer with: "Brahmacharia, Brahmacharia, Brahmacharia!..." Maharishi left no doubt that Brahmacharia life is the best life for reaching highest state of consciousness and invited all who want to be sincere Brahmacharies to form a group and Maharishi will take care of all their needs. I hope this has taken out your doubt. Warmest regards Ashutosh Urs
