The Indian Government through Indian Council for Cultural Relations

will award 23 scholarships to Kenyans in the 2003 and 2004 academic

year.

Given through its Council for Cultural Relations, the scholarships

are in four different categories - 12 under general cultural

scholarships, six under the Indo-Kenya Cultural exchange programme;

four under the Commonwealth Scholarships and one under the Africa Day

scholarship programme.

Further to the 16, there are the 10 annual bursaries to the nominees

from the Commonwealth countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America for

the training of craft instructors in India.

While the general cultural scholarship is for undergraduate courses

only, the Indo-Kenya cultural exchange programme and the Commonwealth

scholarships are for postgraduate and Ph D courses.

The Africa Day one caters for all levels of university education.

The High Commission's first secretary, Mr Sri Chand, said the

scholarships are for any university in India and cover tuition fees,

accommodation, stipend and air fare.

However, those awarded general cultural scholarship will have to

raise the airfare.

The intakes for most universities in India starts during April, thus

those who qualify for the scholarships will have to enrol by then.

Nominations for the scholarships will be done by the Ministry of

Education. , Science and Technology at Jogoo House.

Meanwhile, the High Commission will hold the Indian education fair in

Nairobi on February 22 and 23. Twenty five Indian universities

offering professional courses ranging from medicine, architecture and

engineering, will participate in the fair to be held at the Hilton

Hotel, Nairobi.
