NRI wins top US Medal for Science

Washington, June 13

President George W Bush presented the National Medal for Science and

Honour to 20 scientists, including Arun Netravali, a pioneer of

digital television.

"Some of the honourees are learning how to battle cancer with new

therapies," President Bush said. "Others are advancing our

understanding of the Earth and the Sun. Still others are creating

new methods for analysing data.''

A scientist at Lucent Technologies and Bell Labs, Netravali

said: ''From my biased perspective, I think there is nothing as

exciting as science and technology.''

After presenting the awards yesterday, Bush expressed his respect

not only for the awardees, but also for the importance of research

overall.

He said this year's federal budget has devoted more money to

research and development than ever before.
