Hari Mandir or Temple of God was built by Guru Arjun in

1601 in=the centre of

the tank (Amrit Sarovar) in the city of Ramdaspur

(founded by G=ru Ram Das)

that came to be known later as Amritsar or the city that

grew a=ound the tank.

After Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780 to 1839) beautified the

templ= with gold

work, the central dome of the temple and the upper half

of the =alls were

covered with Gold-leafed copper sheets, the name Golden

Temple =ame into being.

Quote Khushwant Singh " Of the 15028 names of Gods that

appear =n the Adi

Granth, Hari occurs over 8,000 times", which is probably

how th= Hari Mandir

got its name. Hari as most of us know is a name for Lord

Vishnu=
