Happy New Year. This is the month of Gudi Padwa on April 13 and Baisakhi in

Punjab or Boisakh in Bengal and the Tamil New Year all fall on April 14.

Baisakhi signifies the begining of the harvest season and on 30/3/1699 -

Baisakhi day Guru Govind Singhji founded Khalsa.

 

1. In Defence of Hinduism by Swami Vivekananda     -    After Swami's phenomenal

success as a defender of Sanathan Dharam at the Parliament of Religions in

Chicago in 1893, several meetings/messages were held to congratulate him. It

was to the Address of the Hindus of Madras that he wrote his first reply. The

speech covers 'why the people of the North are grateful to those of the South,

how the Shrutis are the backbone of Indian thinking, defends idol worship,

criticises the Missionaries, what shall happen if India dies etc.

2. Arya Samaj was founded on 10th April 1875     -     read about its founder

Swami Dayanand Sarasvati's early life and his fight for the truth, teachings of

Swamiji including the ten principals of the Arya Samaj, the Women who posioned

Swamiji, social ideals and aims, Shuddhi movement (reconversion of Muslims to

Sanathan Dharam - how Abdul Rashid killed its chief proponent Swami

Shraddhananda) and Philanthropic work, impact of the Samaj on India 1875-1947.

5. Kumbh Mela and the Media    -    this is the Editorial of the monthly

magazine of the Ramakrishna Order, Prabuddha Bharata. " The main concern of the

media is improving sales. And in order to sell, they can go to any extent.

That’s what many did with regard to the Kumbha Mela news also. They printed

offensive and sometimes doubtful pictures, and published derogatory reports,

comments, and even editorials. They saw only politics, indecency, etc, in the

Kumbha Mela too". Coming after the biased hyped up media reporting in Gujarat I

6. Indo-Pak Wars    -    The article deals with the 1948, 1965 and 1971 wars in

7. Motivation in Indian Management    -    by Dr Nalini Dave tells how an

understanding of Indian philosophy could increase motivation at work.

In response to continous criticism of Sanathan Dharam I reproduce a letter

written by Swami Vivekananda that was published in the Chicago Daily Tribune of

20 September of 1893, “ We who come from the East have sat here on the platform

day after day and have been told in a patronizing way that we ought to accept

Christianity because Christian nations are the most prosperous. We look at

history and see that the prosperity of Christian Europe began with Spain.

Spain’s prosperity began with the invasion of Mexico. Christianity wins its

prosperity by cutting the throats of its fellowmen. At such a price Hindus will

not have prosperity. I have sat here today and I have heard the height of

intolerance. I have heard the creeds of the Muslims applauded, when today the

Muslim sword is carrying the destruction into India. Blood and sword are not

for the Hindu, whose religion is based on the laws of love”.
