Old merry Viipuri

Old merry Viipuri (now called Vyborg by the Russians, still called

Viipuri by Finns) is the capital of the lost province of Karelia and

has an almost mythical status in songs and stories. Before the war

it was Finland's most cosmopolitan place and also, with 74,403

inhabitants in 1939, the second-biggest city. In addition to the

Finns who lived there, there were thriving communities of Russians,

Germans, Swedes and Jews. Economically and culturally, bustling

Viipuri was the gateway to St. Petersburg. - The castle built in

1293 still guards the city. Picture from 1939.

Towns named Puri can be found up near the artic circle and along the

tropical coast of east India.Viipuri residents are called Viipurini. Vedic terms

are still a wideworld

phenomena though they are rarely recognized.

Thats why we are here...to remind the world about its true

heritage.
