Saraswati and Purity:

The two sages Vasishtha and Vishvamitra were both violently opposed

to each other. Once sage Vasishtha was practising penance on the

banks of the river Saraswati. Angry Vishvamitra ordered Saraswati to

flow away Vasishtha. Saraswati hesitated for a while, but seeing

furious Vishvamitra, broke through her banks where Vasishtha sat

meditating. Looking Vasistha washed always, Vishvamitra was very

happy.

However when he saw that Saraswati instead of destroying Vasishtha,

is protecting him and is carrying him onto the other direction at a

safer place. This angers Vishvamitra and curses Saraswati, turning

her into a river of blood.

At the behest of Shiva, the two sages became amicable and once again

there was pure water in the river Saraswati.

This is why she is also referred to as Shonapunya, a Sanskrit word

meaning 'one purified of blood'.

Vasant Panchami and God of Love:

Legend has it that on the Vasant Panchami day Lord Shiva burnt the

God of Love, Cupid of Kamadev. Lord Shiva was lost in Samadhi and to

break his Samadhi into impassion him to beget a son powerful enough

to kill the demon Tarakasur, Gods send Cupid the God of Love. Cupid

or Kamadev discharges an arrow at Lord Shiva from behind a tree. But,

Shiva gets terribly angry and reduces Cupid or Kamadev to ashes with

his third eye.

So many people worship Kamdev, the god of love!.
