The story goes that Kali was created to deal with a demon that was

ravaging the earth. She came down and did her "dance of destruction

(or death)" and was so into this dance that she didn't realize she

had already killed the demon and was now killing innocent people.

Shiva, her dear love and husband, came down and threw himself upon

the dead bodies. Only when Kali realized she was trampling on Shiva's

corpse did she come to her senses.

It is based on this story alone that you will find many pictures and

statues with Kali standing upon Shiva.

there is a lot of intricate explanation involved with the position of Shiva and

Maa Kaali on top of him. the puranic story is authentic and conveys only an

outer meaning. however, if we study deeply, the figure of Kaali reveals the

chaitanya or the action involved in every body and being and this stands on the

perfect Sivahood or the truth. shiva is known for purity and truth called "Sat"

and the mother evolved from his is known for action and life called "Chit" and

their union is the happyness or the joy called "ananda" making the trinity

satchidananda which is the ultimate triangle of life. we find this triangle in

each and every integral part of our life, no matter even an iota of it. this is

what i feel about Maa Kaali and Lord Shiva.

always at the feet of my Guru,

Samvidaananda saktha
