The efficacy of Pranava (AUM) is repeatedly stressed in the entire literature

and puranas. In Kathopanishada the immediate benefit accrued by such Upasana

of AUM after conquering the evil pain of death is stressed. That is why the

Aum is described in the later portion repeatedlyl.

Repetition of Aum with meaning and Bhava will remove all obstacles in the

spiritual path. Short intonation destroys sins, long intonation containing two

or three maatras leads to Gyana, even siddhis….and if we reach the fourth matra

of Aum, it leads to Moksha

While in the body, Jivatma exists on the strength of the life-force, which is

limited in its sphere of activity. Since the same life-force pervades all

space in creation, the Jivatma that leaves the body sustains itself as an

individual on the all pervading life-force, as an entity. Whether within or

without the body, the Atma needs life-energy to exist as Jivatma.

In the Absence of life-force, the soul cannot be a Jivatma. The word jeevati

indicates living. Jivatma lives whereas Soul exists !!

One who conquers death by identifying himself with death at the time of leaving

body, moves in the astral worlds with knowledge of the mystery of creation,

even as a jivatma. He is a conscious soul without a body, but with knowledge

!!

Such jiva fits into the description of Brahmsutra :- Jeevo Brahmaiva naa para….

Hence most of the Upanishadas have stressed on the Pranava, the giver of Mukti!
