peace

"Our goal must be not peace in our time but peace for all time."

In turbulent times, where is our attention? On the problem? Or on

the desired outcome? What can we do to help the world situation, while

we are here comfortable in our homes and we know that others are

suffering? We can't all go out and battle, nor would that help even if

we could. We must think peace. We must bring our attention to peace.

We must create a unified consciousness of PEACE ON EARTH, GOODWILL TO

ALL. We must build a class consciousness of love and caring. Starting

right here and right now, with each one of us.

"Your neighbor is your other self dwelling behind a wall. In

understanding, all walls shall fall down." Khalil Gibran

Is peace possible?

Yes I believe it is. Perfection? not likely given the state of

division in today's world, the anger, and the intolerance, (leave

alone acceptance of each other). It is evident that the world

situation has triggered the surfacing of underlying feelings of

intolerance among many who don the cloak of spirituality. Hate

begets hate, an "eye for an eye makes the world blind" and extremist

black and white thinking is destructive and we are seeing this in

action today. Deliberate miscontruing of events, defensive attacks,

and blame game are all part of this world wide surfacing of

insecurity, and an insincere lip service to tolerance and peace.

To me this situation is actually welcomed. It provides an

opportunity, a mirror for all to work out aspects about themselves,

as part of their spiritual journey. When we neglect our physical

health, remain in denial of ones' condition, use band aids to

address problems, we see an avalanche of consequences and are forced

to pay sincere attention to our health. Similarly to me, this is

happening in our world today. Masks of civility are off, and the

world is being forced to address real issues seriously. The world is

only as we are, and the masquerade is over. This applies to each and

every one of us, because only we know what and where we need to make

changes.

A small but poignant example was the recent horrendous terrorist

bombing in Benaras. While the huge fear was a repeat of the Mumbai

massacre which followed the Godhra massacre, this time it didn't

happen. The event was condemned universally for what it was, and I

am hoping sincere steps are being taken to address core problems. It

is a small start, but a huge step for a community who wishes to live

in harmoney and live the words of peace they speak of.

By virtue of being a member of the human race we have the

responsibility to do our part in assisting the process of peace.

What methods we choose, depend on our consciousness, and we reap

consequences accordingly. Imposing ones beliefs doesn't help anyone.

Dialogue, genuine attempts to understand others and their needs

and making appropriate changes do help. Participating in sincere

governance, changing of unfair laws, all this is part of that

responsibility. One has to water the roots to nourish the leaves of

a tree.

To start the process, however we need more and more people who

believe in peace, acceptance, and mutual respect, in ideas of

Mudita, Karuna, and Maitryi. Intention and its clarity is the

foundation of any manifestation.

" We are what our deep driving desire is. As our deep driving desire

is, so is our will. As our will is, so is our deed. As our deed is,

so is our destiny". Brihadararanyaka Upanishad (IV.4.5)
