Guest guest
Mithya is a very important concept in Vedanta. It is like a foundation of Vedanta teaching. The classic examples frequently used in Vedanta teaching are the snake on the rope, pot superimposed on clay, gold ornaments are nothing but names and forms superimposed on its sub-stratum, which is gold. In all these examples the superimpositions are Mithya and the sub-stratum alone is 'real', e.g. snake, pot and ornaments are Mithya because their existence is dependent upon the existence of rope, clay, and gold respectively, which alone are real. It is thus concluded that when rope is apprehended, the illusory snake disappears, all clay pots are essentially clay only in different names and forms, all gold ornaments are nothing but gold only. Therefore, Mithya means that which does not have an independent existence. Its existence depends upon something else. Dream is Mithya in relation to the dreamer. There can be no dream without the presence of the dreamer (the subconscious mind). For anything to exist there has to be a sub-stratum or another medium to support it. For the visible world, the substratum is the Atman, Self, Consciousness, God etc. It is like a movie projected on the screen in the background as it's substratum. The world does not have an independent existence, its existence is dependent upon the existence of God, therefore it is Mithya. There has to be a cause for the effect to exist. God alone is the causeless cause for this world, which can and does exist independent of anything else. Therefore God alone is the TRUTH and everything else is Mithya. radhakutir ****************************************************************************** Know the Lord to be the only real thing in the midst of things unreal.
