Guest guest
Namaste. _/\_ Happy Guru-vaar to all. ------------------ The story is as fresh as it was first told. We do not know by whom or where, perhaps by nameless hermit in ancient Benares or Vrindavan and retold again by other hermits in Baghdad or Jerusalem. And centuries later, it is still the only story around or atleast the only story worth listening to. It is a creation story. Long, long ago, at play in His enchanted Garden, God told His children, "OK kids, now we are going to play hide and seek. Here I go, and you seek Me." And playfully He hid Himself in so unsuspecting a place, a place He was sure nobody would look for Him. That place was the heart of His own children. The kids searched for Him everywhere, that is everywhere except in their hearts. They searched for Him behind the trees, behind the rocks, behind the bushes, on the mountains, in the caves, on the river banks, but He was not to be found. Then some of the kids, being kids, got tired and gave up the game of search. Some fell asleep, some got distracted by other things, and some stayed on the game and continued the search. Meanwhile, in His place of hiding, God was begining to feel a little lonely. Concerned that they would never find Him, He wanted to emerge out of His hiding place and say, "Hi kids! Here I am, right near you! Right within you! In fact, I never left you. I was so near you, and you are searching far." But God had a secondthought as always. "No, let them find Me. I do not want to deny them the thrill and exitement of seeking Me out by themselves, and the joy will be mine too!" To help them find Him, He sent out signals. From His hiding place, He played tunes on His Flute. The kids heard the notes of the Flute. The strain was familiar. It was coming from a source deep within themselves. Yes, it was the signal. He is near, so near. They felt comforted by His presence. They felt secure. Hoping to follow the tune to its source, they turned their eyes and ears inward attentively. The music was near and clear at times. At times faded and far, and again it was not heard unbroken. There were gaps, gaps of absence and silence. But there was joy in silence too! Joy in the memories of the music, joy in the anticipation of its resumption, joy in the waiting! And in the rapturous resonance of the melody, the children of God became God-like. It was creation time again on Earth. The children said,"Let there be music." And there was music. The children said, "Let there be poem." And there was poem. The children said, "Let there be painting." And there was painting. The children said, "Let there be dance." And there was dance. God from His hidng place in the heart observed and it was good, very good. He was proud of His children. They were like Himself, CREATIVE. Man has always suspected himself to be a part of something larger than himself, though it is not always that he has lived up to that estimation of himself. His deepest longing born out of this loftiest sentiment has been to reunite himself with this larger something and to be whole and complete again. It is no different from the natural desire of a shiny dewdrop to return to the shining sea. In the language of Religion, this desire has been variously known as "Love of God, devotion, and Bhakti in Sanskrit.
