Today devotees are celebrating 'Yama Dvitiya' or 'Bhaiya Dhooj',

remembering Yamuna devi and Her brother, Lord Yamaraj who is also one

of the 12 'Mahajanas', great divine personalities.

Below is an excerpt from: 'Appreciating Sri Vrindavana Dhama'-

by Mahanidhi Swami:-

The Supreme Lord expands into different forms to enjoy transcendental

pastimes and his eternal associates expand along with Him; to render

a variety of loving services.

Visakha sakhi, Sri Radha's dearest girlfriend, expands in one form as

the Yamuna River in order to assist in the aquatic adventures of the

Divine Couple.

Srimati Visakha devi thinks only of the happiness of Radha and

Krishna. Her bodily complexion, age, actions so much resemble

Radharani's that whenever Krishna sees Visakha, He instantly

remembers Sri Radha.

Upon seeing the Shyama- blue color of the Yamuna river (Visakha's

liquid form), Radhika immediately thinks of Her Beloved, Krishna.

The Yamuna river (also called Kalindi) is a transcendental river

eternally flowing in Goloka Vrindavana. She appeared in this world as

the sister of Yamaraja and the daughter of the sun-god, Vivasan.

Kalindi is also considered one of the internal energies of the

Supreme Lord Krishna.

According to the Varaha Purana, as quoted by Jiva goswami, there is

NO difference between the water of the Ganges and the Yamuna, but

when the water of the Ganges is sanctified one-hundred times, it is

called the Yamuna.

The Vishnu Purana states that since the Yamuna eternally flows in the

spiritual world; her waters are so purifying that bathing one hundred

times in the Ganges is equal to one bath in the Yamuna.

In the Vedas, the personified Ganges River prays to the Yamuna,

"O Yamuna, you purify the three worlds and have manifested from the

left side of Lord Krishna's body.

I along with everyone else in the three worlds am always praying for

your mercy.

You are the life force of Lord Krishna; so please accept my humble

obeisance at your lotus feet again and again.

You are even worshipped by the residents of Goloka.

Anyone who touches you is guaranteed of entering the divine pastimes

performed in Goloka Vrindavana!"

On this auspicious occasion, let us offer glorification and prayers

to the Consort of Lord Krishna from Sri Yamunashtakam.

This sublime prayer was composed by Sri Mahaprabhu Vallabha Acarya of

Pushti Marga, very similar to the verses of Sri Shankara

Bhagavatpada.

Suraa Sursu Poojitaha, Smara Pituh Shri yambibhrateem.

Shri Yamunaji is capable of giving all kind of achievements. This

first shloka describes the physical state of the river. Its both

banks are full of glittering sand which is believed to be as soft as

lotus feet of Shri Murari Prabhu (Shri Krshna.) Also, there are

various kind of gardens of the both banks of the river. The river

water is full of scent due to flowers of the garden on her banks.

Shri Yamunaji is also worshipped by two kinds of vraj devotees. I bow

to Shri Yamunaji described above, full love and devotion. She is

capable of giving fulfillment of all the desires of the devotee in

enjoying God's love.

Kalind Girimastake, Pata Damand Poorojjwalaa,

In this shloka, Shri Mahaprabhuji describes that how Shri Yamunaji

can bless her devotees to increase their love towards Shri Mukund

Prabhu. Also, Shri Mahaprabhuji describes the physical existence of

Yamunaji as river. It flows enthusiastically from the top of Kalind

mountain. The swirling waters appear to be as white as milk because

of the force and flow of the river upstream. It seems like Shri

Yamunaji is very eager to go in Vraj and meet Shri Krshna. It also

gives impression as Shri Yamunaji is swinging in best kind of jhula.

Victories to this most divine daughter of the Sun !!

Priyabhiriva Sevateam, Shuka Mayur Hansadibhihi,

Tarang Bhuj Kankana, Prakat muktikavaluka,

When Shri Yamunaji came to earth from the heavens, She blessed the

whole globe by Her presence. All living beings, including birds such

as parrots, peacocks and swans, serve Shri Yamunaji. Shri

Mahaprabhuji visualize the glittering sand as her bangles of pearl

and the waves upon the waters as beautiful divine hands of Shri

Yamunaji, moving to and fro in a continuous manner. The meandering

waters form beautiful banks on either side of the river, which look

like the volupturous curves of a beautiful maiden. She is favorite

fourth queen of Shri Krshna. And Shri Mahaprabhuji asks us to bow to

her.
