Dear Manjiri Bhalerao,

Having read your mail below it struck my mind to inform you about a recent

lecture that took place in Kolkata.

Dr L M Singhvi, well known scholar in the field of Indology & Sanskrit as well

as Ex-Ambassador of India to U.K, delivered a lecture - "The Future of our Past"

at the Asiatic Society, Kolkata on Feb 10th, 2006. I thought this would be quite

relevant to what you are talking about.

Regards

RP Jain

Workshop on "Cultural Legacy & Heritage Management"

Cultural Legacy & Heritage Management

Cultural Legacy in the form of tangible and intangible heritage is our

'Present', a gift to us from the 'Past' that has to be carried forward in the

'Future' and that is why it is often said that there is no 'Future' without

reference to the 'Past'. That legacy is handed down to us in various forms:

monuments, sculptures, paintings, literature, performing arts, folk traditions,

and so on, which needs to be preserved and managed well for the benefit of our

future generations. Preservation of our cultural legacy is not an easy task. It

calls for a skilled and knowledgeable task force of professionals from varied

fields.

There are various aspects of Heritage Management depending on its form.

Conservation and preservation of tangible forms like monuments, sculptures,

paintings require expertise of artists, art historians, scientists, and also

engineers. However, it is often experienced that except art historians, experts

from other fields lack the information of this field and its occupational

avenues.

Awareness and adequate information of the country's heritage is also essential

for people working in the industries like tourism and hospitality. Needless to

say that even journalists, artists also benefit if they are well informed about

the subject.

It is also observed that such information is usually difficult to obtain in a

concise form. Keeping this in view a two-day workshop that would prove

beneficial to a varied audience is announced by the Sanskrit Department of Tilak

Maharashtra Vidyapeeth on "Cultural Legacy and Heritage Management".

Dates: 11th and 12th March 2006.

Venue: Lokmanya Tilak Sabhagrih, Tilak Maharashtra

Vidyapeeth, Gultekdi, Pune 411037.
