Guest guest
Dear All, I came across a copper plate inscription in Sanskrit (which is edited and translated into English by Benjamin Lewis Rice in Epigraphia Carnatica) documenting an endowment of a village called Mudiyanur(cUDA-grAma)by a Bana dynasty King to some 25 Brahmanas. The date of which is 261 ShalIvAhana Shaka. The inscription records the gotras and caraNas of those Brahmanas and all of them belong to sAmAnya-caraNa. I am aware of Shaunaka's 'caraNa-vyUha' and Ghurye's 'Two Brahmninical Institutions - Gotra and Carana'. But there is no mention of 'sAmAnya-caraNa'. Is there any other research done on the 'Vedic Charana institution'? I request the Indology community to put light on this subject. Sincerely, R.Chandrashekar
