Thanks for the very informative one. Can you give the date of the broadcast on

CNN?

It's not informative, it's steriotypical. It's a bit like a Saudi

Arabian journalist who has never lived outside the middle-east going to

the US and sending home a story about strip clubs. Yeah, with enough

cliches thrown in about 'moral decadence' and 'loss of family values' to

win the envy of Vatican.

As someone who has spent his childhood and youth in rural and urban

India, I can assure you that you don't "have to carry the cross of

untouchability even in the cities" and that city slums are not "almost

entirely populated" by "untouchables." Nobody gives a damn about

untouchability except in the remotest of villages. Yes, it exists there,

but then there are lots of cultural differences between the US Mid-west

and the coasts. To go into a one-horse town in Arizona and make a

documentary on "how people live in the US" is not journalism, it is

re-enforcing age old prejudices- all too easy. Journalism is not about

converting greys into black and white but what seems black and white

into the ever-so-slightly-changing shades of grey.

Besides, when fly-in-by-chopper "social reporters" do news stories on a

phenomenon that has survived and evolved over 4000 years, they should at

least have the courtsey to talk to some neutral social experts. As they

say in journalism, your sources are your quotes, if you want a nice and

simple 'India is still so backward' story, you will of course go to

those who have vested interests in showing India to be so. For example,

NGO's who want money from the US to fight "untouchability," though

hardly any of them understand that it cannot be mitigated untill you are

able to ensure minimum education to all the children in India. So too

with christian missionaries eager to show how "the nation of more than

100 billion is ripe for the harvest of faith." Perhaps, fly-in

journalists with halos on their heads should keep out of this place..

Looks like it was broadcast on 60 Minutes (CBS) and not CNN.
