Guest guest
Dear List, Can anybody point me to the (spurious? -- not found in TITUS' rAmAyaNa text!) passages from vAlmiki's rAmAyaNa where kirAtas are described in the following terms: http://www.bongoz.com/south_asia/eastern_himalayan_culture.htm << The Ramanaya describes: The Kiratas with their hair down up in knots, shining like gold and pleasant to look upon, bold enough to move under water, terrible, veritable tiger-men, so are they famed. >> http://www.mypurohith.com/Encyclopedia/EnclopK3.asp << KIRATAS -- Foresters and mountaineers living in the mountains east of Hindustan. (There is a tribe in the Central Himalayas called Kirantis.) They are described in the Ramayana as "islanders, who eat raw fish, live in the waters, and are men-tigers" (men below and tigers above, according to the commentator). Their females are described as "gold-coloured and pleasant to behold," and as having "sharp-pointed hair-knots." >> Thanks.
