Guest guest
Dear List: pratyaharas are abbreviations. This term includes: (1) abbreviations of the Siva Sutras, (2) sup and suT from the su-au-jas group (3) and ting-tang from the tip-tas-jhi Am I missing anything. Will ku-cu-Tu-tu-pu given aNudita-savarNasya be included in pratyaaharass. How about ~NI for ~NIp, ~NIz, ~NIn and 'Ap' for Tap,cap,DAp. Also are 'sup', suT' the only abbreviatiions the trimuni used?? Someone suggested 'Ap' for elements between 'TA' and 'sup. Am I missing naything else. All this feedback will go into my pratyahara software. Many thanks. Guest guest
Hello Chetan, The term pratyAhAra, by the way is not to be found in Panini's own sUtras. While you are correct that the term has been used in later grammatical works to refer to sup, tiG, taG, etc., it is not used with reference to other short-forms like GI and Ap, though they are indeed shortforms. It may be useful to check the vArttikas and the bhASya to see if the term pratyAhAra was originally used only with reference to those derived from the ZivasUtras, and only later extended to include sup etc. Keep in mind that titles like pratyAhArAhnika that one finds in the edition of the mahAbhASya do not necessarily go back to the manuscripts of the mahAbhASya. You can consult Pathak's index to the words of the vArttikas and the bhASya to check the occurrences of the word pratyAhAra in these works.
