Dear list members,

When I asked if compounds of the form xxx-kRt-yyyy were valid, I didn't mean

kRt affixes in general but compounds of the form for example " vighna-kRt "

..

vighna-kRt means "interfering"

So can I say vighna-kRn-nara "an interfering man" .

I ask the question because I've seen the note in Monier-Williams for - kRt -

"only ifc. Pan. 6-1 182 "

Many thanks,

Harry

The form vighna-kRn-nara seems perfectly possible. Forms like pApa-

kRt-tama and veda-vit-tama abound in the epics. While the forms with

-tama are viewed as cases of affixation by Panini, the PrAtizAkhyas

treat them as cases of compounding.

I would also like to add that I have come across a high frequency of

expressions like sUtra-kRn-mata "opinion of the author of the sUtra",

vRtti-kRd-virodha "contradiction with the author of vRtti", bhASya-

kRd-vacana "words of the author of the bhASya" in the grammatical

literature. Longer compounds like bhASya-kRd-vacana-virodhApatti

"undesirable possibility of contradicting the words of the author of

the bhASya" are also common.
