Artur,

Could mahAdvIpIy nidhAy mean "continental divide"? We have one in the

US, but I hadn't heard the term in reference to India. It's a matter of

a line dividing the direction in which the rivers flow. In India such a

thing could be in the Vindhyas (E-W), or between the Ganges-Jumna system

and the Five Rivers, I should think. The Wikipedia says that the term

is not limited to that in North America, but is applied elsewhere,

though I can't see that it discusses the South Asian subcontinent.

Or could it refer to continental plates or their junctures?

At what latitude and longitude is it?

Allen,

On my map both the phrases are in big letters, spread along the contours

of Deccan Peninsula. In the west - beginning around Kachchh and ending

close to Kanyakumari, in the east - beginning from around north of Puri

and ending slightly north of Adam's Bridge. But --- off the land-mass,

between the line of the shore and the first contour line marked on the sea.

Looks like "continental shelf". However, not even one of my Hindi

dictionaries suggests this meaning for "mahAdvIpIy nidhAy". (No "nidhAy" in

BRhat HindI Koz). The map-maker's impromptu invention? Used once, and then

discarded?
