Guest guest
Andrew Lawler should be complimented for a balanced presentation of the problem of writing system in Sarasvati Civilization (earlier called Harappan Civilization or Indus Script). The presentation is contrary to the breath-taking claims made by Farmer (the 'brash outsider' as Lawler claims), on behalf of the three authors. Farmer may keep his $10000 though, which he has gambled on a claim that anyone producing a sample writing with 50+ symbols will get the award money from an un-named donor. I assume that this brazen award is based on the assumption that each 'sign' (what the trio call 'symbol') is an alphabet like the letter 'e' in English and ignore the presence of many other glyphs such as alligators, lizards etc. What pray are these? Symbols or not? Who defines what the 50+ symbols are when the award-money is claimed? Why only 50 symbols? Why not 49 or 30? Those who need the exquisite pictures adorning the article, email kalyan97 Witzel and co. have a lot of questions to answer. The argument is just joined. Cheers, MW.
