Gayatri Mantras

Dear list members,

 

I've been asked to supply some information on Gayatri mantras, the mantras

that are in the form:

.. . . . vidmahe

.. . . . dhimahi

.. . . . pracodayat

 

and I did a search on the electronic Bloomfields concordance to locate the

early occurances of these.

 

This showed that in the texts covered by Bloomfields concordance their are

26 different names of deities with Gayatri mantras, but these all( except

for one which occurs in the Rg Veda Khila) occur in the maitrayani samhita,

maittiriya aranyaka and the Mahanarayana Upanishad (with one also occuring

in a late upanishad).

 

4 of the Gayatri mantras occur in all three texts, the Maitrayani Samhita,

Taittiriya Aranyaka and Mahanarayana Up.

 

4 of the Gayatri mantras occur in both the Taittiriya Aranyaka and the

Mahanarayana Up.

 

2 of the Gayatri mantras occur in both the Maitrayani Samhita and the

Mahanarayana Up.

 

5 of the Gayatri mantras occur only in the Maitrayani Samhita

 

3 of the Gayatri mantras occur only in the Taittiriya Aranyaka

 

7 of the Gayatri mantras occur only in the Mahanarayana Up.

 

1 of the Gayatri mantras occurs only in the Rg Veda Khila

 

Is there some explanation why the Gayatri mantras would be concentrated in

these three texts and in particular why the same Gayatri mantras would

appear in all three texts (the Maitrayani Samhita, Taittiriya Aranyaka and

Mahanarayana Upanishad). Is there some connection between these three texts?

It may be noted here that TA-10 *is* Mahanarayana Up.
