Hi group. I wonder if someone, off the top of his or her head,

would settle an argument I am having with a friend, wherein I

am 'arguing' from a position of complete ignorance, because I cannot

understand Panini even in English.

To wit: Do the ancient indian grammarians have concepts and

categories corresponding roughly exactly to those known as tense and

mood in western grammar, or have I just been deceived by western

Sanskrit grammars that have forced quite different and alien indian

conceptions of the verb into western categories, as this friend

claims to me?
