Guest guest
Dear list members, The article "The pronounciation of Sanskrit" by S.K. Chatterji says that up to about 200 years ago the traditional regional pronounciations of sanskrit in the different sanskrit learning centers of India were very different. But that about 200 years ago at the same time that the script of sanskrit was standardizing into devanagari due to printing a "standard sanskrit pronounciation" was chosen to be taught in the sanskrit colleges and learning centers. (I don't have the article in front of me, but I think the article said that what was chosen was the pronounciation of Varanasi with some Maharashtrian elements.) which was considered closest to the pronounciation of medieval madhyadesa. I'm trying to get some audio cassettes or cd's of "good standard pronounciation of classical sanskrit" to see what is considered good standard pronounciation in classical sanskrit in general and of anusvara before sibilants and semi-vowels in particular. So I got the idea that perhaps the sanskrit colleges or learning centers might have some audio material to teach good "standard" pronounciation of sanskrit. Can any of the list members suggest which sanskrit institutes or Professors might have such material. As I mentioned one of the things I'm really interested in is material from which I can get what would be considered the "standard" pronounciation of anusvara before sibilants and semi-vowels. Just as an aside I found not one but two different and complementary articles called "The Pronounciation of Sanskrit" by S.K. Chatterji Many thanks, Harry Harry Spier 371 Brickman Rd.
