Dear list members,

A while ago I asked for help clarifying a translation of a number in

verse 78 of the Paramarthasara (KSTS vol. 7.)

I now believe that the number being translated is NOT

catvAriMzaduttarazatadvayasaMkhyAtAM

BUT catvAriMzaduttarazatadvayasaMkhyAtAM prAkArapaGktiM niHzeSAm

Where:

prAkArapaGktiM is a compound standing for a number

I think this, because I've found " paGkti " listed in Kane's

Dharmasastra vol 5, part 1 page 702 as the number 10 in his list of

numerals indicated by words. It is also listed in Monier-Williams as

either 5 or 10.

As I mentioned before the translation I've been given for

catvAriMzaduttarazatadvayasaMkhyAtAM prAkArapaGktiM niHzeSAm is 244.

With this additional information can anyone tell me how 244 is

derived.

Many thanks,

Harry
