Guest guest
moksamargasya netaram bhettaram karmabhubhrtam jñataram visvatattvanam vande tadgunalabdhaye Dear friends Jaya Jinendra Hindi and Marathi are mutually intelligible. Hindi traces its roots to Khadi boli, Apabhramsa and Sauraseni Prakrit. Marathi traces its roots to Maharastri Prakrit. Which itself was a further development of Sauraseni Prakrit. Also, both languages are replete with tatsama and tadbhava words. (Imo, Hindi has fewer Sankrit tatsamas than Marathi, because of its khadi boli roots.) Hence, there is lexical as well as syntactical similarity between Hindi and Marathi. Also, at the behest of Lokamanya Tilak, in the early 20th century Marathi adopted the Devanagari script, gaving up its own modi script. Hence, it is very easy for Hindi valas to read Marathi, and vice-versa. My mother toungue is Hindi, my family has lived in Mumbai since the past 103 years. I have never felt that Marathi is geatly different from Hindi. If you get used to the larger percentage of tatsamas in Marathi, you will find that Marathi and Hindi are quite close to each other. Hindi and Marathi are mutually intelligible to a large extent. Almost all native Marathi speakers can easily follow Hindi. And they can manage to speak Hindi. Similarly, Hindi-speaking natives of the state of Maharashtra can understand Marathi to a large extent. bhavadiyah, Manish Modi To order books please write to manish.modi For regular updates on Jaina and Indological books, please to JainandIndology For regular updates on Hindi and Urdu literature, please to Hindibooks HINDI GRANTH KARYALAY Booksellers and Publishers 9, Hirabaug, C.P.
