Guest guest
Dear Indologists, a friend wonders if Hindi and Marathi are mutually intelligible. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question, so any help is appreciated. TIA, /BP
Guest guest
My family is a Marathi speaking family. My daughter is married into a Hindi-speaking Rajasthani family, and our collective first-hand experience is that Hindi and Marathi are not mutually intelligible to normal speakers, unless one has learned the other language to some degree. In the mixed family gatherings, if we are speaking in Marathi, my daughter's in-laws as well as our son-in-law typically get frustrated in following the conversation and finally we switch to Hindi or English. However, there may be mutual comprehension in the border areas of Maharashtra and Madhyapradesh where the speakers of both languages are routinely exposed to each other.
