Kishore,

Thank you for the information on upa puranas. Would you be able to give

information on the size

of these puranas in number of verses and their probable date of creation..?

In addition to these

are, i suppose the various Sthala puranas....Is there any count of the total

number of puranas

found...including puranas proper, upa puranas, stala puranas etc?

Thanks all,

Hari

Re: Regarding upapuranas

list of upa puranas:

1. Sanatkumara

2. Shivadharma

3. Narasimha

4. Durvasa

5. Nandi

6. Brihan-Narada

7. Kapila

8. Manu

9. Usanas

10. Varuna

11. Kalika or devi

12. Vashishtha

13. Vashishtha Lainga's Mahesvara

14. Samba

15. Saura

16. Parashara

17. Marichi

18. Bhargava or devi bhagavatam

The missing one here is siva purana. this is not the same as the

vasistha purana, which seems to be replacing siva purana. Some lists

include both vasistha and siva but delete shiva dharma and marici to

include aditya purana, thus retaining the number in the list at 18.

hari,

my pleasure.

I have tried for the info you asked for. But none of the standard

encyclopadiae seems to have talked about it, except that some of the

lists have replaced one or the other puranas with Nilamata purana

(history of kashmir).

I think such work is done only on Puranas and Vedas, interest being

initiated due to the internal references to the number of

slokas/mantras etc.

For eg., Agni purana lists all the eighteen puranas (Bhavishya purana

being conspicuous by its absence) along with the number of slokas in

each of them. Needless to mention, hardly any purana tallies the

score.

Similiarly, information like number of mantras etc about Vedas is

given in the vedic literature itself. (please visit my pages

http://www.geocities.com/siva_sai19/vedas)

But no such information seems to be avaialable on Upapuranas.
