Guest guest
moksamargasya netaram bhettaram karmabhubhrtam jñataram visvatattvanam vande tadgunalabdhaye Dear friend Jaya Jinendra Interesting to read what you wrote on castes and tribes. Chandragupta Maurya was a high born Ksatriya, but poor. He was Canakya's protegée, and became an emperor. It is said that later, he adopted Jainism, became a Digambara monk and took sallekhana at Candragiri, in Karnataka. Today, many people who use Maurya as their last name, are traditionally dhobis (washermen). This is prevalent in Uttar Pradesh. But on this basis, to assume that the Mauryas of that era were people who belonged to the lower castes is not supported by facts. bhavadiyah, Manish Modi To order books please write to manish.modi For regular updates on Jaina and Indological books, please to JainandIndology For regular updates on Hindi and Urdu literature, please to Hindibooks HINDI GRANTH KARYALAY Booksellers and Publishers 9, Hirabaug, C.P. Guest guest
I think you are agreeing with me. I said that the entire tribe will not belong to the same caste. This is called caste-tribe matrix. ie the respect I command will be a function of both my tribe as well as my caste. Hence, CGM need not be a 'lower' caste person, where as he might be belonging to a 'lower'tribe. On the other hand, it is not correct to say he is poor either. If he were poor, he could not have taken on the Nandas, who, if nothing else, are mislery and hence, terribly rich. The present set of people bearing the name of Mauryas or for that matter, any other king's tribe's name may have two types of origins: 1. They may really be belonging to the same tribe, yet they need not be ksatriyas. they can belong to any type of caste, depending upon the prevalence of such castes at the time. 2. Those who worked with the king are likely bear the name of the king's tribe name, irrespective of their origin. In Andhra pradesh, the Reddy is a caste of land lords and is used as a suffix in the names. But you will so often find this name born by people of several other castes too; they got this title coz their ancestors have worked with some famous Reddy in the days of yore. kishore
