Guest guest
"The Puranas" by Ludo Rocher in the series "History of Indian Literature whose general editor was Jan Gonda may be helpful to give a good account of almost all the Puranas-mahapurana and upapurana. Regarding the studies about the upapuranas R. C. Hazra's books are the only available of its kind. In fact more studies are to be undertaken by scholars on the Puranas an especially the upapuranas which are, I feel, neglected fields. Ganesan - Harihara Krishnan INDOLOGY Monday, July 12, 2004 8:11 PM [Y-Indology] Regarding upapuranas Information on the upapuranas seem very scarce to get. Can anyone give me the below information. How many in number? What are the important ones? Their typical size, the size(in number of verses) of the biggest of them (Amond the puranas proper the Skandha could be the biggest with around 81000 verses followed by padma purana with 55000) Also what about the date of creation of these upa puranas.. Guest guest
list of upa puranas: 1. Sanatkumara 2. Shivadharma 3. Narasimha 4. Durvasa 5. Nandi 6. Brihan-Narada 7. Kapila 8. Manu 9. Usanas 10. Varuna 11. Kalika or devi 12. Vashishtha 13. Vashishtha Lainga's Mahesvara 14. Samba 15. Saura 16. Parashara 17. Marichi 18. Bhargava or devi bhagavatam The missing one here is siva purana. this is not the same as the vasistha purana, which seems to be replacing siva purana. Some lists include both vasistha and siva but delete shiva dharma and marici to include aditya purana, thus retaining the number in the list at 18. kishore
Guest guest
Kishor, May I know the source from which you got the list of these Upapurana-s ? As you are aware there are different list with regard to this in different texts. It is always convenient for reserachers to cite the refrences. Thanks Ganesan - kishore mohan INDOLOGY Wednesday, July 14, 2004 5:52 PM Re: [Y-Indology] Regarding upapuranas list of upa puranas: 1. Sanatkumara 2. Shivadharma 3. Narasimha 4. Durvasa 5. Nandi 6.
