Firstly thanks Valerie for the info. on saGghAtaye .

 

Secondly, in a printed version I have of the kundalini stava, the fifth

verse is as follows. In the first line there is the compound

dhAtAzaGkaramohinI . I'm wondering if this is a misprint. Is this a possible

compound or should it be dhAtR-zaGkara-mohinI . Monier-Williams has

compounds of the form dhAtR-xxx . The translation I have for this phrase is

"the enchantress of Shankara and the creator".

 

dhAtAzaGkaramohinI tribhuvanacchAyApaTodgAminI

saMsArAdimahAsukhapraharaNI tatra sthitA yoginI |

sarvagranthivibhedinI svabhujagA sUkSmAtisUkSmA parA

brahmajJAnavinodinI kulakuTI vyAghAtinI bhAvyate ||

Grammatically speaking, the compound should be

dhAtRzaGkaramohinI. However, that violates the meter

ZArdUlavikrIDita, which needs the second syllable to be a guru

syllable. That seems to have prompted the author to use dhAtA...

in the place of the grammatically more correct expression

dhAtR... Some times one does find such deviations from the

norms of standard Sanskrit. In one of my publications, I have

pointed to the two readings of a verse in the same meter:

 

reading A: aadau devakidevigarbhajananam gopIgRhe

vardhanam

 

reading B: aadau zrIdevakidevigarbhajananam ...

 

The first reading shows the metrical shortening of the last

syllables of devakI and devI. On the other hand, a devoted

copyist, as seen in the reading B, adds the word zrI to

devakidevi..., in the process violating the meter again.

 

Here the original author seems to have placed the metrical

needs above the norms of grammar, while the second author,

probably a copyist, has placed the devotional needs above the

metrical needs.
