catvAriMsad = 24 (= chatvAri+ vimsat)

uttara = above

zatadvaya = 100 x 2 = 200

 

This come to 224 and not 240 or 244.

I've been given the following translation:

 

What is the order of the prayer, this is answered by the author thus. Two

hundred forty-four beads (constituting the garland of beads used for prayer)

symbolise the thirty-six tattvas constituting the entire universe, the order

of elements (tattvas) beginning from the limits of the atmavidya to the Siva

and the group of all internal as well as external senses . . .

 

But I can't see where the number 244 comes from. Shouldn't the translation

of catvAriMzaduttarazatadvayasaMkhyAtAM be 240 instead of 244 ?

 

Any clarification of this would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the word catvAriMzat is to be analyzed as catvAri +

dazat -- i.e. four decades -- and the meaning is thus 40.

I accept that I made a mistake in giving the meaning of catvAriMzad as 24

instead of 40. I could locate the following words and their numbers.

 

24 caturivimzad

40 catvAriMzad

44 catuzcatvAriMsad.

 

 

Therefore the number under discussion

 

seems to be 240.
