Guest guest
I believe in classical Tamil, <tol> meant old or ancient, as in <tolvinai>: precious karma. Again, <kAppiyam (kAviyam)> literally means an epic. Thus here <tolkAppiyam> may be interpreted as <ancient literary work.> Indeed it is the oldest extant work in Tamil. It is very possible that the book acquired this epithet at a later period of Tamil literary history. This seems plausible when we read statements to the effect that the author of the work was a pupil of Rishi Agastya - which may strike some as a legendary, rather than a historical attribution.. V. Raman February 17, 2004 - peekayar indology Tuesday, February 17, 2004 12:13 AM [Y-Indology] tolkaappiyam One derivation of the word tolkaappiyam is that it is the treatise authoured by tolkaappiyan or tolkaapiyanaar. However, I find from A History of South India by Nilakanta Sastri (page 77)that the real name of Tolkaappiyan was TriNadhumaagni, who was a pupil of Agastya. Therefore, it occurs to me that the name Tolkaappiyan has come to mean the authour of Tolkaappiyam. This is similar to Krishna Dvaipaayana being called Vedavyaasa, meaning the editor of vedas. What is the meaning of Tolkaappiyam. Kaappiyam is no doubt the Tamil equivalent of kaavyam meaning a compositon. What is tol? I find from the OTL (Online Tamil Lexicon)tol means speech. Therefore, tolkaappiyam means a treatise on speech, which is nothing but the grammer of speech. Here speech refers to Tamil language. I request Tamil scholars to respond to this proposition. Guest guest
In tolkaappiyam, the letter "o" is short. "tol" means --- old, ancient. On OTL you have looked up the meaning of "tOl", i.e., with long "O". Best wishes. Guest guest
<tolvinai> means <preVious (past/old) karma<, and NOT <preCious karma>, as the typo misread/misled. V. V.
