I'm reading some books about Tamil and Dravidology by Devaneya PaavaaNar. PaavaaNar mentions that even though Bishop Caldwell assumed wrongly that the word, "tamiz" (MTL-Cologne transliteration) is derived from "draviDa", Grierson wrote that "tamiz" is the origin of the sanskrit term, "draviDa". Grierson's position is the standard view among Dravidologists now. http://listserv.liv.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind9812&L=indology&P=R19268 Does anyone have the exact reference to Grierson's writing about tamiz > draviDa. I assume it may be in the volume on Dravidian languages in the Linguistic survery of India. Regards, N. Ganesan
