simple grammar question

Dear list members,

A beginning Sanskrit grammar has the following example:

We know that Arjuna is a hero. --- arjunaM vIraM bodhAmaH |

Is this the usual way of saying this in sanskrit or would it be more usual

to use something like:

arjunaM vIraM iti bodhAmaH for "We know that Arjuna is a hero." since --

arjunaM vIraM bodhAmaH -- can also mean "We know the hero Arjuna."

Many thanks,

Harry

Consider the attested usage in one of the Sanskrit epics:

kramaad amum naarada ity abodhi sa.h /

"Gradually he recognized him as Naarada."

The other alternative would be amum naaradam abodhi. But

note the case difference. With 'iti' we have 'naarada iti', but

without iti, it would be naaradam. The second pattern (without iti)

is illustrated by the Bhagavadgiitaa passage:

bhayaad ra.naad uparatam manyante tvaam mahaarathaa.h
