Probabilistic/statistical analysis of historical evidence

I have past I have attempted to do some automated fitting to decide

a chronology. That led me to think of probabilistic analysis of

historical theories.

I was told by someone that some work on statistical analysis of

historical evidence exists.

I am looking for techniques that would algorithmicaly weigh

conflicting theories (perhaps requiring iterative evaluations),

rather than rely entirely on personal judgement.

Can anyone suggest some suitable references?

*** Here is some site I chanced upon yesterday. It looks at the

chance or probability of certain words in two different languages

looking alike. I have not yet checked the rigor of the probability

assumptions.
