Guest guest
Monier-Williams entry: sinIvAlI Meaning f. (of doubtful derivation) N. of a goddess (in RV. described as broadhipped , fair-armed , fair-fingered , presiding over fecundity and easy birth , and invoked with Sarasvati1 , Ra1ka1 &c. ; in AV. she is called the wife of Vishn2u ; in later Vedic texts she is the presiding deity of the first day of new moon , as Ra1ka1 of the actual day of full moon) , the first day of new moon when it rises with a scarcely visible crescent RV. &c. &c. ; N. of a daughter of An3giras MBh. ; of the wife of Dha1tr2i and mother of Dars3a BhP. ; of Durga1 L. ; of a river Ma1rkP. In classical Tamil sangam texts, cinai, pronounced as sinai, is "pregnancy, branch, to appear, to form". sinai-iDli is idli given pregnant women. On various animals getting pregnant called as sinai (cin2ai in Tamil orthography)) http://www.services.cnrs.fr/wws/arc/ctamil/2002-09/msg00072.html http://www.services.cnrs.fr/wws/arc/ctamil/2002-09/msg00051.html In CT texts, one way dalit persons are called is "izi-cin2an", izicin2an2 'low born' is replaced as 'izi piRappALan2' in CT, and this makes us wonder if cin2ai/cin2am 'pregnant, branch, birth' is involved in calling "izicinar". http://www.services.cnrs.fr/wws/arc/ctamil/2002-09/msg00046.html http://www.services.cnrs.fr/wws/arc/ctamil/2002-09/msg00067.html (Or else, izicin2an2 = izi+icin2+an2 (Cf. uTaRRicin2ar, munticin2ar in PatiRRuppattu)). Is the RV goddess, sinivali connected with Dravidian languages' sinai (to become pregnant, to form, a branch)? Thanks for ref.s or textual discussion, N.
