Matanga, Buddhism

In a chapter on Buddhism in a popular history text in India, I

encountered the following passage -

""Buddhist scriptures adopted a much more liberal attitude towards

the lower castes. Not only could members of all the four varnas join

the Samgha and become monks, but even untouchables like the Chandalas

and Pukkusas could achieve nirvana. Matanga, the son of a Chandala,

is said to have attained the infinite bliss which many kshatriyas and

brahmanas could not achieve."

Could list members point out which portion of the Tripitaka contains

this reference? Does this Matanga have anything to do with the

Matanga Muni of Mahabharata, who was the son of a Vaishya father and

a Sudra mother?

Regards,

Vishal
