Guest guest
---------- Forwarded Message ---------- [JainList] Poet Pampa Mon, 11 Mar 2002 19:15:23 +0530 "ymalaiya" <ymalaiya jainlist Dr Kamala Hampana, a scholar and former professor of Jainology, University of Mysore, today urged the state government and other academies to hold special programmes to mark the 1,100th birth anniversary of well-known Kannada poet Nadoja Pampa. Addressing a news conference here, she said the poet who born in AD 902 at Annigeri in Navalgund taluk of Dharwad district had contributed a lot for the enrichment of Kannada language. Kannada literature witnessed its golden era during the Rashtrakoota period and the poet got patronage under King Arikesari of Chalukyan dynasty. Pampa wrote two mahakavyas in 941 AD and then penned Adi Purana within three months and Vikramarjuna Vijaya in the next six months. These works popularised the Kannada language in that period. In 1882, Benjamin Loirice first wrote about Pampa and published the Pampa Bharata. In 1900, Sri S G Narasimhachar brought out Adi Purana and in 1931, Kannada Sahitya Parishat published the revised edition of Pampa Bharata. At that time the 'Pampotsava' was celebrated at Laxmeshwar. The state government later established the 'Pampa Foundation' at Annigeri and also instituted 'Pampa' award. The Hampi Kannada University has also instituted 'Nadoja' award in memory of Pampa. Dr Hampana said this year being 1,100 birth anniversary of Adi Kavi Pampa, the state government, Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Sahitya Academy, universities, various organisations and litterateurs should take up the task of celebrating the birth anniversary of the great poet in a befitting manner. The poet Pampa also inspired another great poet of Telugu Nanaiah. The forefathers of Pampa belonged to Vengipalu Agrahara in Andhra Pradesh and there was a taluk called Muni Pampa in Nalgonda district. In view of this, both Karnataka and AP Government should jointly hold celebrations for three days either at New Delhi or Hyderabad. The brother of Pampa, Jeenavallabha also considered as a great poet in Telugu literature and his works in Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit were found at Tribuvana Tilaka temple, Chakreshwara Yakshi at Bommalagutta in Andhra Pradesh. However, this small hillock which has these temples and scriptures were now in Gangadharam of Karimnagar district, and in a state of neglect. Both the governments should declare this hillock as a tourist spot and take up developmental works. She wanted the state government to bring out a stamp in memory of poet Pampa and prepare a documentary on the life and works of the poet to be screened at all the cinema halls compulsorily for one year, besides telecast the same on Doordarshan. While the Department of Kannada and Culture should hold programmes to introduce the works of Pampa, the Kannada Sahitya Parishat has to hold programmes in every district, taluk and hoblis. The Sahitya Academy has to hold seminars with the academies of Andhra and Kerala, besides a special discussion on the works of Pampa at the All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. The government should develop a garden at Annigeri, she added.
