Jha, Cow) <snip> A Hindutva connection is not clear. -Arun Gupta --\ -- Following are a few online articles to enlighten Arun Gupta (and possibly others): 1. http://www.indian-express.com/ie20010809/top10.html [Extract:THE Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is fuming and is planning a protest against a Delhi-based historian¡¯s book which says long before the advent of Islam, a typical Indian meal included beef.... When contacted, VHP leader Acharya Giriraj Kishore said he would wait till he had read the book to initiate action. He was of the view that Prof Jha had probably not referred to the correct texts. ¡®¡®There have been many recent additions and he has probably seen those as none of the original texts would have included the instances he is citing. People don¡¯t understand the vedic language and therefore make their own interpretations which are usually false. These are just Western influences, attempting at spreading the non-vegetarian culture,¡¯¡¯ the VHP leader said. ] 2. http://www.linguafranca.com/print/0111/insidepublishing.html [Extract: Upon the book's publication, groups loyal to the BJP whose election manifesto routinely promises to ban the slaughter of "cows and cow-progeny" in those states where it is not already illegal immediately demanded the author's arrest and a ban on the book. Jha has not been arrested, but after a number of religious and animal-rights groups filed petitions, a court in the southern city of Hyderabad ordered the publisher to desist from printing, publishing, and releasing the book anywhere in India until further hearings are held. As a result, says Jha, Holy Cow is "for all intents and purposes banned." ] 3. Guest guest
What is wrong with banning cow slaughter in India? Hindus and Jains revere cows and so want the law implemented. If westerners think this is objectionable because some minorities eat cows in India (and basically because they themselves do so), then can I question whether eating dogs is allowed in the US or UK? If not would it not be discriminatory towards Koreans and Vietnamese who eat dogs? Laws are not absolute but relative. So one society should not look down on another based on its own presumptions as to what is good and bad.
Guest guest
I think this debate does not belong to this egroup. While we may debate critical interpretations of plausible evidences of beef eating etc., to argue over Indian govt's policies may be off-scope. I am fraid we might end up hijacking this calm egroup to destruction if undisciplined. IndianCivilation egroup seems to be open to this. Regards, P.
