Hi everybody,

I am new to this group.Just joined today. This is my first post to

this group. When I browsed at the messages of this group I saw

a "happy new year" message.I for the past many years am not

celebrating english new year and english birthdays of me and my

family. In the modern world vaishnavites have to adapt many western

ways to survive like wearing western dress and eating western

food. But as far as possible let us ignore habits like English new

year celebration, valentines day and english birthdays.

To introduce myself I am sampath kumar doing my Phd in marketing in

Tennessee.

Dear Bhagavathas ,

Question : Why do people celeberate their Birth days.

My answer :

According to Srivaishnava Philosophy , we chits , are supposed to be part and

parcel of the Lord Sriman Narayanan , before the start of the Creation of the

Universe by the Lord.

So when the Lord has gives us this body , mind and soul , it is our beholden

duty to thank HIM continuously for keeping it fit to perform HIS prescribed

Karmas based on our vasanas , in line with HIS teachings.

As explained in Srimad Bhagavatham , there are nine devotional processes through

which we can try to serve the LORD for HIS happiness. Sravanam , Keerthanam ,

Smaranam , Paada Sevanam , Archanam , Vandanam , Daasyam, Sakhyam and Aatma

Nivedanam.

For doing all these one’s physical body and the mind should be in sound

condition and control . Here , we should have HIS blessings for its proper

functioning. Especially , when one advances in age , the sense organs do not

listen to our wish and command and they try to function as per their wish . Even

though we may be careful In looking after our physical body , unless we have

Lord’s mercy in full measure at every stage , we will be far from achieving our

objective.

So we celeberate our birthdays , only to thank the Lord for having given us this

sound health conditions to do the karma and service for HIS satisfaction.

Celeberating birthdays with pomp and glory to show off one’s riches or status is

not at all appreciated by the LORD and hence to be avoided. It should be a

simple thanks giving function for the satisfaction of the LORD.

Regards

Yours Ramanuja Dasan- G.Sampath.

In the same score , the writer feels that there is nothing wrong in celeberating

New Year's day , whether it is English Or Tamil or both so long as we celeberate

it with the understanding that it is nothing but a thanks giving opportunity to

the Lord done for keeping us fit for one year to do HIS service for HIS

satisfaction.

In the modern days , on many occasions , we may be forced to go by peer

pressures , due to circumstances , but we can over come it , by finding a way to

observe the formalities , with NISHKAMA KARMA attitude , at the same time

spreading the message implied , to others . We can start practising , sothat

over a period we will be able to achieve our objective. The writer is sure you

would be able to get the point being stressed on this.

Incase you feel you have a different opinion , kindly feel free to express .

Regards

Adiyen , Ramanuja dasan- G.Sampath.
