Om Namo Bhagavathe Sri Ramanaaya...

Hi Miles

It is a lovely, pure verse. For the benefit of all members, this is the eleventh

Verse of Sri Bhagavan’s Ulladu Narpadu Anubandham, the Supplement to the Forty

Verses. Some of the verses are written by Sri Bhagavan, some from the Agaamas,

some by Adi Sankaran (Mohamutkaram, Vivekachudaamani and Tattuvopadesam), and

some by anonymous writers. One of our ‘Anons’ is “Yaar” [sri Lakshmana Sarma],

who is indeed the author of this original verse in Sanskrit.

We can further explain for members that the chat really began at two o’ clock in

the form of a telephone conversation; it began for me, as hearing Miles talk

about the ‘three worlds’ mentioned in verse 39 of the Supplement, and then the

conversation drifted to Verse Eleven, and what an honour it must have been for

LS to have Sri Bhagavan to translate a verse in Tamil based on Yaar's

composition!

It was a light and playful chat; not to be outdone, Lulu —Sri Miles’ Amazon

Parrot— had taken to her game of aerial dive-bombing, swooping in from a great

height, and missing him by an inch or so as she completed her graceful

acrobatic arch. As if in answer to to the aeronautics taking place in Scotland,

here in East Anglia we had crows flinging some objects around on the roof, and

this was also interspersed with power cuts, and a little thunder.

The verse in Tamil:

piRaNta t’evanRan piramamuu lattee

piRaNtat’eva n>aanen[d]Ru peen>i — piRaNtaa

navanee piRaNtaa navanitamu niisa

navanavana vanRinamu Naadu

We can expand this, writing the English words underneath.

piRantatu evan tan piramamuulattee

was born he who self (?in) Brahma root indeed

pirantatu evan> Naan en[d]Ru peen>i — piRaNtaan

was born where the-‘I’ having asked and cherished

avanee: avan Nitam; muniisan

he indeed: he is perpetual; Sage Ishvara

Navan Navan avan tinamum Naadu

Born Born* he daily ...........find out! investigate!

*Note. The repetition of a word emphasises and shows its ongoing occurrence, and

this is further reinforced by the words ‘daily’ and ‘perpetually’.

The purport (from: Lakshmana Sarma’s book) could be translated:

He who investigates by asking, and carefully attending to the technique “Where

was this ‘I’-sense born?”, He is truly in Brahman-root (rooted in Brahman), He

is verily born; He is perpetually born, of all Sages he is Ishvara; born and

born again, He is new every day. Find out for yourself!

There’s a short explanatory comment which follows on in the book, perhaps our

Suri could translate this better than me. :-)

The chat proceeded, interspersed with the various knocks and flips of daily

life; Lulu, climbing onto her master’s shoulder, she sidled up to the handset

and whispered suggestions that we should also partake of apple or carrot. Four

o’ clock drew nigh; so after some liquid refreshment, the conversation merely

drifted into the chat room, where the same thread was continued for some

time...

That noble one (udAraH) who by means of the enquiry 'Whence am I?' has attained

birth in the supreme source of his being (the Self), He alone is born. In

truth, He is constantly born. That Lord of Sages is ever new.

Hello John,This verse has been sitting with me since we spoke. You asked about

'janiM' I stupidly said 'man'. It is in fact birth. lebhe is the perfect form

(with a passive sense) of labh - obtain etc. as previously mentioned.the verse

says-That noble one (udAraH) who by means of the enquiry 'Whence am I?' has

attained birth in the supreme source of his being (the Self), He alone is born.

In truth, He is constantly born. That Lord of Sages is ever

new.color>Regards,Miles

Dear John,

very lovely report - enjoyed much by all the three: John, Miles and Lulu it seems.

The supplement to 40 is quite wonderful - though so often read still new and fresh and demanding.

There is also said much about the Heart. Perhaps this could be a theme for our next chat?:

The Heart in the supplement to 40 - would much enjoy.

yours in Sri Ramana

Gabriele
