[rangapriya] Pearls of Wisdom - V

shriimate shrii ra~Ngapriya mahadeshikaaya Namah

SrI:

Dear BhakthAs :

A sishya of HH Sri Ranga PriyA Swamy captured the essence of

a recent anugraha BhAshaNam from this great Acharyan .

It apepared in the saister list dedicated to Sri RangapriyA

MahA Desikan by His sishyAs .

This is an important upadEsam of wide interest to all of us .

Hence I have taken the liberty of sharing this revelatory UpadEsam .

NaarAyaNa ,

V.Sadagopan

> Paramapujya bhagavatotamas and saha acharyapaadaanghrireNus,

>

>

> The author visited mandiram along with three friends (This was their

> first visit and hopefully the first of many more to follow). Swamiji

> asked us to sit down. Swamiji was alone and a divine silence was

> overflowing in His presence. To break the ice, Swamiji enquired about

> our well being and said, "There are three planes of existence for us.

> The physical plane, the intellectual plane and the spiritual plane.

> There is no place for doubt, arguments, counter arguments and the like

> in the spiritual plane. However, most of the time is spent by us in

> the physical and intellectual planes. There are bountiful doubts in

> the intellectual plane. One must certainly get them cleared. This will

> help us spend more time in the spiritual plane. If you have any doubts

> in the intellectual plane, I would be glad to clarify them. You may ask".

>

>

> The author was reminded of the sloka in Srimad Bhagavad Gita where

> Gitacharyan says

>

>

> tadviddhi pranipatena pariprashnena sewaya

> upadekshyanti te gnanam jnaninastattwadarshinah(Gita 4-34)

>

>

> [one should go to some spiritual master with faith and devotion;

> offspring himself for his services wit humble salutations, should

> express his curiosity for the attainment of that real knowledge. Those

> great philosopher saints, seers of Truth would preach you the proper

> methods of attaining pure knowledge.]

>

>

> Author was wondering, devoid of any sukrutam if one was to get this

> kind of upadesam, then it must be the anugraham of the acharyan. Added

> to that is the loftiness of the three souls that the author has

> accompanied. The author submitted his manaseeka namaskarams to those

> souls who were instrumental in begetting the amrutavarsham from the

> acharyan. Sadguru's grace being avyaaja karunai, it has also drenched

> the author who as mentioned earlier is the least worthy; the less said

> the better - for Swamiji used to say just as boasting about oneself is

> ego, so is talking ill about oneself.]

>

>

>

>

> There was a brief pass. Nobody raised any

> questions. Swamiji understood the predicament and said, "I myself will

> tell you something today".

>

>

> "Ok. What weapons does Tiruvenkatamudayan have?" asked Swamiji.

> "Discuss, conch..." came the answer.

>

> "Fine", said Swamiji. "In times of yore, people used weapons like

> spears, bows and arrows, swords, etc. So is it because of this they

> imagined that the Gods also had similar weapons. If that be so, should

> not the Gods now be holding guns, atom bombs, chemical and biological

> weapons etc!!!", asked Swamiji.

>

> "No. The Lord will not have such modern weapons because, the Lord

> revealed His to the great Yogis as He is because of His infinite

> mercy. Neither the form nor the weapons are mundane ones. They weapons

> are tatvas. The conch represents the buddhi tatvam and the chakra

> represents the manas tatvam. There is an annecdote in Mahabharatam.

> Ashwatama was one of those who visited Bhagavan Sri Krishna before the

> kurukshetra war. As he was a guruputra, Bhagavan did atiti satkaram

> and asked him if He could be of some help. Ashwatama asked for the

> sudarshana chakra from Bhagavan. Bhagavan agreed to give him the

> chakram but wanted to know as to why he wanted it (as if He did not

> know). Ashwatama in all audacity, told that the chakram is invinsible

> and using that he would slay Bhagavan in the war, for, if Krishna was

> eliminated the Kuru army will register victory in no minute. Bhagavan

> told that he may take the chakram (raamaH dvir na abhibhaaSate [Rama

> does not speak two things] - Valmiki Ramayanam Ayodhya Kanda - Sarga

> 18, Verse 30) and fulfill his manoratham. Ashwatama tried all his

> might to lift the chakram but could not. His hands got buried under it

> and became crest fallen. Bhagavan had to perform first-aid for him and

> sent him off will lots of gifts. This story illustrates the fact that

> the sudarshana chakram is manas tatvam and not a mundane weapon. If

> one has to weild it, He has to be beyond it. Do you get the point as

> to what manas tatvam is?....It is the summation of all minds...my

> mind, your mind, his mind...the universal mind. Similarly buddhi

> tatvam is the universal buddhi...The supreme Lord Sriman Narayana one

> who is beyond these tatvams alone can weild them.

>

> It is true that He has spun this web of maya which keeps us entangled.

> It we try to get out of it using our manas and buddhi, we get into

> further trouble. The all merciful Lord has put some escape points in

> this web. He reveals them personally or through His mouth pieces (the

> acharyas) to those who seek refuge Him. May we all take refuge at the

> Lotus feet of the Lord and seek His grace to escape this bhava jaalam.

> He will definitely save us".

>

> In a succint fashion, Swamiji drove home the greatest upaayam

> "prapatti" for escaping the birth-death cycle and drove the darkness

> shrouding our mind and intellect...for He is gu(darkness) (ru)dispel.

>

> paalitasiShyavraataM prapattimaargadarshakam

> bhavabhiitiharaM antara~NgapriyaM bhajaamyanvaham.
