Guest guest
Some of the views expressed by Ramana is 'Ramana Gita' are quite a departure from the traditional views held thus far. For instance he asserts that women too can practice the path of knowledge if they are ripe for it. He also states that the body of a woman illumni is a temple of God and consequently it should not be cremated but buried and worshipped. We also find that he places before the society as its goal the ideal of 'brotherhood based on equality'. Just imagine how radical these views have been in 1917. Ramana was in his mid-thirties at that time. But what wisdom flows from his lips! One wonders, 'Is there anything which he does not know?' The image of the youthful, primal guru Dakshinamurti immediately comes to the mind. In May 1908, the Muni started to Tiruvottiyur for penance. He was in a great spiritual mood after staying with the Maharshi for several months at Pachaiamman Koil. His reason for deciding to leave for penance is best stated in his own words, "Even though seeking the Self resulting in the perception of one's own real nature is undoubtedly the best attainment, siddhi, I thought that it was not enough. He also questioned the Maharshi, "Is seeking the source of 'I' thought sufficient for accomplishing all my aim or is mantra dhyana needed?'. The Maharshi replied, "The former is enough." The Muni was convinced. Yet the idea of penance was so deeply ingrained that he sought Ramana's blessing. Out of the vastness of his compassion Ramana advised the whole world through the Muni how the goal of Self-attention is to be pursued. "One should cast one's burden on the Lord of the Universe who is always victorious. He is the excellent doer of all actions. you should always concentrate your intellect on the heart, which is the seat of the Atman and abide there. "This does, the lord, is powerful enough to fulfill your object in the future". The Lord of the Universe controlling the past and the future should be entrusted as the efficient actor. "When the time comes, the excellent object would be fulfilled. Let there be no doubt in your mind, jewel of the learned. By steady abidance in the heart , your welfare is sure. Let the work be surrendered to Siva". To be continued from "Timeless in Time" by Natarajan
